Rain Gutters Loose Or Sagging? An Easy Way to Make the Reattachment Permanent

!±8± Rain Gutters Loose Or Sagging? An Easy Way to Make the Reattachment Permanent

Problem -- The weight of the gutter loosens the spikes holding it in place.

A common problem with rain gutters is their pulling away from the fascia board they are attached to. Not only does this sagging look bad, but the guttering will no longer catch and transport the rain water away from the house effectively.

This problem often happens when the smooth-appearing seamless guttering is installed with 7" ribbed gutter spikes that yield sunken barely-visible matching-color heads. This installation looks great. Over time, however, the weight of the guttering together with the weight of the rain water, snow, and ice slowly pulls the spikes from the fascia board and rafter-ends they are driven into. The homeowner will try to fix these sagging gutters by re-hammering the spikes back into their original holes. Yet, when these spikes are re-driven that way, the guttering will loosen again in a short period of time. Here is a simple but efficient  way to make this reattachment permanent without having to make new spike holes in the guttering or fascia board.

Fix -- Inject a thick caulk-type liquid adhesive into the loosened spike holes, and then drive the spikes back into these holes.

A quick and simple fix to this problem is to squirt a thick construction-type liquid adhesive into the spike holes that loosened up. This adhesive generally comes in a caulking tube, but it can be purchased in a squeezable toothpaste-like tube having a pointed outlet as well. After pulling the spike from its loosened fascia-board hole entirely, simply squirt an adequate daub of the liquid adhesive into that hole itself. Then drive the spike back into that original hole while keeping the gutter width-spacer in place over the spike. The guttering will usually stay in place while the adhesive dries out. The idea here it to affix the spike back into its original spot permanently. This repair technique works well with most residential guttering, even if the fascia board shows wear. It also allows the seamless guttering to retain its clean smooth all-the-same-color appearance.
